Free Dental Treatment on Fridays

2018, Jan 25 · 3 Minute Read

Yes, I know that the premise of free dental treatment seems too good to be true.

But it really is.

On Prima Day you can get dental treatment at no cost based on need and pain even if you do not have insurance.

When I first brought up the idea for free dental clinic every week with my staff, little did I realize how much need there was for affordable dentistry in my hometown of Brampton.

I hoped that a few people would show up in the first week or so. However, much to my surprise, the response has been incredible!

People have called in from around the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) asking about the free dental clinic and even walked in asking if the dental treatment is really free because they feel that there is some sort of catch.

GOOD NEWS, there is no catch. The dental treatment is indeed free of charge and even if there is work that we can not do completely for free due to lab/material costs such as dentures or root canals we make it very affordable for the patient as our ultimate goal is to make sure that you live a healthy and pain-free life.

Prima day’s mission is to give back to the community that supports us. My staff and I donate our time, materials, and our expertise to help you address your dental pains and concerns as we know that typically dentistry can be a huge financial burden especially with a lack of insurance.

I want to share with you some really incredible stories and work from our first month of doing Prima Day as I think the patients who saw us were truly incredible and meeting them has shifted the outlook of our entire team on what it means to align with the needs of our community in Brampton and around the GTA (Greater Toronto Area).

When I came in this Friday morning, it felt totally different.

The excitement from the staff was in the air mixed with anxiety for how patients would respond to this new type of outreach. Most importantly, as a lot of these patients had either not been to a dentist in a long time or never visited a dental office before we wanted to make them feel welcomed into our family.

After a long day of back-to-back consults, we booked 12 patients through the month of January for dental services ranging from cleanings, fillings, extractions and even a root canal.

I can honestly say that doing a simple dental cleaning on someone who hasn't had a cleaning in over a decade brings new joy to the experience. I even discussed oral hygiene including which type of toothbrush to use at home. Fixing broken fillings and removing broken roots that have been in the patient's mouth for so long completely changes them.

The burden of chronic pain and worry is lifted. So many of the patients we are frequenting at Prima Day are adults and elderly who have not had insurance for many years. Hence, they have avoided the dentist due to the fear of the financial burden.

We placed a permanent restoration (filling) on the root canal tooth we completed for a patient. One of the Prima Day patients had a tooth with a crown that was consistently causing her pain to cold and unbearable sensitivity. She had the crown placed in India and the tooth hadn’t stopped hurting since then. We performed a root canal on the tooth for her during the week and she returned with no pain on the tooth. She was so happy After the root canal, the week before the constant sensitivity and pain she felt on this tooth is completely gone.

Now she wants to bring her kids in to see me to make sure that everything is okay with their teeth and to evaluate the need for braces.

Also, a grandmother of the cutest baby boy finished her last extraction of her very loose molars that made it impossible for her to eat and enjoy a meal. Now she calls me her angel.

Wrapping up

For anyone in the field of dentistry who has not yet had a chance to do this type of outreach work, it is truly transformative. And the people who need it the most in our communities are the most appreciative and the most thankful for your effort. All in all, I can proudly say that Prima Day is about remarkable people with incredible stories. This month has been an eye-opener for me and my staff in understanding the need of the people in our community.

Statistics in books are one thing but when you are actually doing the work the experience is out of the world.

I am looking forward to building on this momentum and establishing a culture of sustainable dentist-patient relationships in the coming months at Prima and around the city. I have got some more ideas I want to try for the upcoming months. Stay tuned and join me for the next Prima Day on February 2nd, 2018 for more free dental treatment stories on instagram @dr.saj.
